How to keep wild Oxnard animals out of my garbage cans.

If you have California animals raiding your garbage cans, usually in the early hours of the morning, you first of all need to find out what it is that is doing the raiding because the most likely offender is actually a neighborhood dog and not a wild animal at all. If it is a wild animal or animals that are raiding your garbage then you probably have to do something about it unless you enjoy picking up your rubbish from all over the place after they are done with it. I have seen people who sort their garbage in to different types with one pile being for the local critters, they usually have a place where they feed the critters but they all say the same thing, it doesn't stop the critters from exploring the garbage bins or even coming right up to the house looking for more food.

The easiest way and the first thing you should do is to buy metal garbage cans with lockable lids, this will prevent 90% of raids instantly as even if they can smell the food they cannot get at it and if that happens a couple of times they will then stop coming and looking for it. Most wild Oxnard animals do not have time to waste on garbages they cannot get open when they will know where there is a garbage they can open or another source of food.

On the market now are also some garbage liner bags that have been coated with some chemical compounds and some with some natural herbs that are supposed to discourage all wild animals from attacking you garbage bins, the only one that seems to have any effect at all is the one coated with mint, a lot of California animals do not like the smell but if you put food scraps in the bin and they can smell those to, then their belly overrides their nose.

The best thing you can do to stop animals from ripping up your garbage bins or bags is to deter the animals before they even get on your property, for the nighttime raiders get some motion activated lights, the last thing a nocturnal Oxnard mammal or rodent wants is to be lit up so every predator for miles around can see it, they all realize this could be extremely hazardous for their health. The last main option to prevent your garbage being scattered all over your property is to fence it off in its own little cage and only put it out on collection day.
